Family Matters York

Family Matters York helps to prevent relationship breakdown and unites families of all shapes and sizes: strengthening relationships by giving people the confidence and tools to withstand and overcome the challenges they face. It achieves this through a portfolio of workshops and courses covering, for example, parenting, couples support and handling finances and budgeting. As well as using its own in-house resources FMY has strong and well-established partnerships which allow it to access an extensive range of accredited support programmes tailored to the needs of families.

The Island

The Island provides one-to-one support via trained mentors to vulnerable children in the 8 to 13 age group who are struggling to cope at home, school or in the wider community, or who are experiencing difficult transitions in their lives. Currently 40 young people are receiving mentor support, and given extra resources this figure could easily double.

Street Angels York

Street Angels York have 55 trained volunteers who are available in the city centre of York at week-ends from 9:30pm until 3:30am in order to aid those young people in particular who may find themselves in trouble due to excessive drinking or who may otherwise be vulnerable. Additional times will be covered as more volunteers are trained. Excellent co-operation has been achieved with the police.

The Besom in York

The Besom in York helps people to help others who do not have the resources to furnish, decorate, maintain, or provide essential items for their accommodation and living. Working with 40 different public and private agencies and many churches, in the past twelve months over a hundred projects have been completed involving over 3000 hours of voluntary effort. Hundreds of starter packs have been distributed to help with new homes, babies, Christmas, etc.

Reflect Pregnancy Support

Reflect offers free pregnancy testing and confidential, non-judgemental support for those in a crisis pregnancy. Trained advisors offer information and advice concerning all the options – parenting, abortion and adoption. Trained volunteers also support women who are struggling after a miscarriage or post termination.

All the above charitable mission groups, and indeed most organisations who are engaged in community work, are faced with rapidly rising demand for their services as unemployment bites and personal incomes decline, at the same time as sources of funds are diminishing and national and local government services are cut. For example, York City Council has ceased providing support (e.g. through the Early Intervention Fund) for many charities for the last quarter of the year, and the predictions of support for 20011/12 look grim. Without increasing the aid from St. Columba’s York fewer individuals and families will be supported over the next few years while those needing our collective help will escalate.
